The Case for the Annual Wellness Exam

Adult wellness visits catch problems years before symptoms appear. Blood pressure creeps up quietly for a decade before a stroke or heart attack. Cholesterol builds arterial plaque without any warning. Prediabetes progresses silently while blood sugar climbs toward Type 2.

Certain cancers grow for years before they announce themselves. The annual exam is where those trends get spotted and stopped.

For adults in Oak Lawn and the surrounding south suburbs, keeping up with preventive care is harder than it should be. Primary care offices book weeks or months out. OB-GYN and internal medicine specialists have even longer waits. Working parents and shift workers cannot easily take a mid-morning weekday appointment.

Insurance runs primary care through hoops that shouldn't matter for a routine visit.

FirstCare Urgent Care Center closes that gap. We offer annual women's wellness exams and annual men's exams as walk-in or same-day services, alongside urgent care. Same physician-led team, same clinic at 91st and Cicero, same day access. For patients who have not seen a doctor in three years because primary care felt too hard to book, we are often the on-ramp back into regular preventive care.

This guide walks through what a women's exam and a men's exam cover at FirstCare, what screenings you should expect at various ages, and how our model fits schedules that don't flex easily.

What a Women's Wellness Visit Covers

Our women's exam covers the routine preventive care that used to require a separate OB-GYN visit for many patients. Not a replacement for specialty care when you need it, but the right setting for annual wellness for most adult women.

The exam includes a private, unhurried intake reviewing your medical history, medications, family history, and any current concerns. Vitals, breast exam, and abdominal exam. Pelvic exam and Pap smear or HPV co-testing when due per current guidelines (every three years for ages 21 to 29, every five years with HPV co-testing for ages 30 to 65).

Blood pressure and cardiovascular screening. Standard bloodwork including a lipid panel, glucose or A1C if indicated, thyroid function, complete blood count, and vitamin levels. If you have specific symptoms - fatigue, weight changes, hair changes, menstrual irregularity - we add targeted labs as needed. Perimenopause and menopause symptom evaluation.

STI screening. HIV, chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, hepatitis, and HPV are all available as part of the exam or as stand-alone STD testing. Some tests run on-site (HIV, Trichomonas, bacterial vaginosis) with same-visit results; others are sent to our reference lab and return in under 24 hours.

What we do not provide: birth control and contraceptive management. For patients who need contraception, we coordinate a referral to a partnering OB-GYN. What we do handle beyond routine care includes referral coordination for mammography (typically starting at age 40 to 50 depending on family history). pelvic ultrasound, bone density scans (starting around age 65 for most women), and specialty follow-up when findings warrant it.

The visit typically wraps in 30 to 45 minutes. For working women, our early evening hours during the week and Saturday availability make the annual visit doable without taking a half-day off.

What a Men's Wellness Visit Covers

Most adult men do not see a doctor unless something hurts. By that point, the conditions that cause heart attacks and strokes have usually been building silently for a decade. The annual men's exam exists to catch those trends before they become emergencies.

The exam covers a full medical and family history review, vitals, and a head-to-toe physical. Screening labs typically include a lipid panel (cholesterol), fasting glucose or A1C, complete blood count, kidney and liver function, and a urinalysis. For men over 50 or with family history, we add PSA (prostate-specific antigen) blood testing.

Cardiovascular assessment. Blood pressure, heart and lung exam, and EKG when indicated for men over 40 or with cardiac risk factors. B12 and testosterone levels when symptoms warrant. Skin check for suspicious moles or lesions.

The conversations that get skipped in a rushed primary care visit. Prostate health. Testicular self-exam guidance. Erectile or sexual function - none of it awkward in our setting because it is routine, and we treat it that way.

Sleep quality (snoring, daytime drowsiness, and morning headaches point to sleep apnea, which is dangerously underdiagnosed in adult men). Energy, weight, mood, and stress.

Common findings in our patient population include undiagnosed high blood pressure, prediabetes, elevated cholesterol, sleep apnea symptoms that have not been investigated, and PSA conversations that have been deferred too long. When we flag one of these, we explain what it means, whether next step is lifestyle change with a recheck, medication, or specialty referral.

For working men across Oak Lawn, Burbank, and the south suburbs whose schedules don't easily flex for weekday primary care, our after-work and Saturday hours plus walk-in model make annual exams realistic.

Screenings and Labs, All Under One Roof

The biggest advantage of doing your annual exam at FirstCare is that everything happens in one visit. No referral to an outside lab for bloodwork. No separate imaging appointment for a follow-up X-ray. No return trip to pick up prescriptions.

On-site lab work. Standard blood draws (lipid panel, glucose, A1C, complete blood count, kidney and liver function, thyroid, vitamin levels. PSA when needed) are drawn during your visit and sent to our reference lab, with results typically back in one to three business days. Rapid tests for strep, flu, COVID, pregnancy, glucose, and urinalysis return in 15 to 30 minutes during the same visit.

On-site X-ray. For chest imaging (screening for smokers or as part of a broader workup), or for musculoskeletal complaints that come up during the visit, X-ray is available at the clinic. no referral to an outside imaging center.

On-site medication dispensing. Many common maintenance and short-term prescriptions are dispensed at the clinic after your visit. That includes antibiotics, blood pressure medications, statins for cholesterol, and common short-course prescriptions. Skip the pharmacy line.

Vaccines. Annual flu shot, Tdap booster if due, hepatitis A and B, and MMR are available during any wellness visit. COVID boosters when indicated. Bring your immunization record so we can confirm what is documented and what is due.

Insurance handling. Most major PPO plans cover annual wellness exams at no out-of-pocket cost as preventive care. Our primary accepted plans include Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois, BCBSIL MMAI, and CountyCare, along with Cigna, Medicare, Medicaid, and many others. For self-pay patients, we quote the flat cost of the exam and any tests up front before service begins.

Making Preventive Care Fit Your Real Schedule

The reason so many adults skip their annual exam is not lack of concern - it is scheduling friction. Traditional primary care requires an appointment two weeks out, during business hours, with paperwork and phone tag. For working parents, shift workers, and caregivers, that friction is a real barrier.

FirstCare's model removes most of that friction. Walk-in access means you can come in when it fits your day, not when the appointment book allows. Evening hours Tuesday through Friday cover after-work windows. Saturday hours cover weekends without needing to take time off.

Bilingual English and Spanish staff handle intake for the many families in Oak Lawn who prefer Spanish for medical conversations.

The visit itself is designed to be one stop. Exam, labs drawn, imaging if needed, prescriptions dispensed if warranted, follow-up plan in writing. If a finding needs specialty care - a suspicious lump, a concerning lab, a new heart murmur - we coordinate the referral before you leave.

For patients who have not seen a doctor in years, we hear the same worry. "I don't want to find out I have something serious." The counterpoint is that catching a serious condition early almost always beats catching it late. A high cholesterol reading at age 45 turns into a preventable heart attack at 55 with the right conversation now.

Bring your health insurance card and a photo ID. If you have a list of your current medications, bring that too. For women, note the date of your last menstrual period and Pap smear if known. For men, note the date of your last physical, PSA, and any family cardiac or cancer history.

If you have prior lab results from another clinic, bring them so we start with your baseline.

Call (708) 265-2702 to schedule or ask questions, or walk in during clinic hours. The annual visit is the single highest-leverage hour you spend on your health each year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a separate OB-GYN if I come to FirstCare for my annual women's exam?

Not necessarily. We handle annual wellness, Pap smears, STI screening, and perimenopause or menopause management - the bulk of routine women's care. If you need birth control or contraceptive management, are pregnant, or need specialty surgical care, you will want an OB-GYN. We coordinate the referral when needed.

Do you do Pap smears?

Yes. Pap smears and HPV co-testing are part of our women's wellness exams when due per current guidelines. Current guidance is every three years for women 21 to 29, and every five years with HPV co-testing for women 30 to 65. Different intervals apply for patients with a history of abnormal results.

What labs are included in a standard men's annual?

A typical annual includes lipid panel, fasting glucose or A1C, complete blood count, kidney and liver function, and urinalysis. Men over 50 or with family history get PSA (prostate blood test). Other tests like testosterone, thyroid, and vitamin D are added based on symptoms. All labs are drawn during your visit.

Are annual wellness exams covered by insurance?

Most major PPO plans cover annual physicals at no out-of-pocket cost as preventive care. Our primary accepted plans include Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois, BCBSIL MMAI, CountyCare, Cigna, Medicare, Medicaid, and many others. Some HMO plans require verification. For self-pay patients, we quote the flat exam cost up front before any service begins.

How often should I come in for an annual exam?

Once a year for most adults. If you have monitored conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, or elevated cholesterol, we may want to see you more often - typically every three to six months for lab rechecks. If you have not had a full physical in more than two years, that is a signal to come in soon regardless of how you feel.
